During the last week of school, Mary came up to me to say good-bye. She was heading off to California for a summer internship with plans to transfer away from Oakdale in the fall. We hugged and came to terms that it was quite possible we'd never see each other again. That's how it is with friends sometimes. You say you'll keep in touch... And you do for a while. But then the weeks become months and the months become years. Of course, they'll be that one time when you look them up... And you'll walk down memory lane... Only for you to grow apart again.
I guess that last paragraph could be a little cynical. It doesn't have to happen that way, of course. Many of the friends I had in college will be with me for the rest of my life. But then... There are so many that played a part in the college experience that are gone forever. Life is a cycle that way... New always replacing the old. At least, that's how the cycle should be. It's when that cycle stops that problems arise. It's when we stop replacing the old with new that there is trouble.
My real journal represents some time for me where I didn't replace the old. I was stuck in the year 2000 for a while. Some days, I go back there and get bogged down again. The only difference is that now, it seems I can go back and leave whenever I want. One day, I hope that I don't feel the need to go back. The past is the past. It's good to remember it... Just as we'll remember the friends that have gone by the wayside. But it's most important to keep focused on the present... Just as we should do our best to keep our circle of influence fresh.
Okay. I guess that's enough of a bad metaphor. I'm outta here. Hopefully, I'll be back next week with more real entries...
