WNL-V: "When you cry I taste the salt in your tears"

Long before I decided to start posting "Wednesday Night Lyrics," I'd been contemplating a very similar concept. Perhaps I'd post some lyrics that were important to me. Maybe I would follow that up with an entry or two telling the stories from my life that shared similarities with the story told by the lyrics. Of course, phase one of that plan was thrown out the window the very first week when I posted a song that was brand spankin' new to me. As for the entries? Um. There here somewhere. Heh.

I have a growing list of songs that are on deck for this feature, but it's time once again to bump that list for something new -- yet still very fitting to certain parts of my life (which is the only real requirement for WNL). I've heard a bit of Old Crow Medicine Show's music here and there over the last few years -- probably on Prairie Home Companion or maybe the Grand Ole Opry. It's good stuff... Old-timey stuff... But none of it really stuck with me. Well, that is until I heard one of their songs on a buddy's MySpace page last week. I found myself instantly hooked on "We're All In This Together."

My dear friend, I see your face so clearly
Little bit tired, little worn through the years
You sound nervous, you seem alone
I hardly recognize your voice on the telephone

In between I remember
Just before we wound up broken down
We'd drive out to the edge of the highway
Follow that lonesome dead-end road sign south

We're all in this thing together
Walkin' the line between faith and fear
This life don't last forever
When you cry I taste the salt in your tears

Well my friend, let's put this thing together
And walk the path with worn out feet of trial
'Cause if you wanted we can go home forever
Give up your jaded ways, spell your name to God

All we are is a picture in the mirror
Fancy shoes to grace our feet
All there is is a slow road to freedom
Heaven above and the devil beneath
