Not Disenfranchised, Thank God.

Shortly before I left work at seven this morning, one of the local stations showed a voting precinct about to open (and with no one in line). I was hoping to find my polling place in similar shape... Of course, such was not the case.

When I arrived at the spot, the parking lot was nearly full and the line to vote stretched out into the cool morning air. All in all, it took almost an hour and a half to (1) wait in line to show identification & sign in and (2) to wait in line to get an old fashioned paper ballot. The sad thing is... Idon't live in Florida.

The county I've called home for all of four months is notorious for screwing elections up. As I sat in line, I joked that I had a bad feeling I would end up as one of the estimated 40,000 disenfranchised voters here. Disenfranchised -- I vowed -- would become my word du jour. Instead, my name appeared on the rolls, I voted, went home & took a nap that lasted entirely too long. I didn't say it again until I wrote this... Darn. :-)

More than an hour remains before polls close here... so there is still plenty of waiting to be done. I'm sort in a voting funk today, though. Because I haven't been here very long, there are several local races that I should probably care about, but was too uninformed to vote on. In the remaining races, this was a year of voting for the lesser of two evils... And I hate that. When I voted for several things today... I wasn't so much voting for it as I was voting against the other option.

Of course, all of this isn't so bad if you consider the alternative...
