WNL XXV: Summer has come and passed, The innocent can never last

September 1st, 2006.
My on again, off again boyfriend was driving me from Tucson to Phoenix to catch a flight home to Madison. It was my first trip home since my family got the news that my mom had cancer. It was just days after we learned that her cancer was terminal. The trip came on the heels of a tumultuous summer with the boyfriend, too, and I was terrified of getting on that plane, terrified of facing my family's new reality, and terrified still of having to call him back to the airport when I was sure I would not be able to force myself to board. This song came on the iPod as we were nearing the airport expressway in Tempe. I will never forget the raw and visceral reaction I had by the time the first chorus was sung. Tears streaming down my face, behind my sunglasses, I abruptly changed the song to much protest. And then, to the man I had loved all year, the man who had every inkling of what had recently happened, I had to explain why it was too much, step by step, breaking it down. I wanted, desperately, for someone to wake me when September ended.

We didn't last.

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when Spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

"Wake Me Up When September Ends"
Green Day
